First Week of Feminism Literature
In the first week of my literature class, we explored a called the “Introduction to Global Women’s Studies”. Within this reading, the author presents different ideas such as stereotypes, gender-norms, empowerment, and multiculturalism. Throughout the reading, the author goes into explanation about how women around the world are fit into different norms and stereotypes regarding their expectations to bare children, start a family, stay at home, etc. However, as you look across different cultures, you can see a change in the stereotypes. For example, in the Middle East, it is legal to kill a daughter of yours if she is seen in public with a man that is not hers. However, many other cultures see that as murder and unethical. Women are faced with many challenges especially is the workforce with unequal payment, which changes based on their ethnicity. Women around the world are constantly fighting for equal rights. The term feminism, refers to the equal opportunities women should have. However, similarly to stereotypes, feminism changes through different cultures.
